AMHERST, Mass. - Sara Plourde struck out 15 batters in a two-hit shutout performance and Kyllie Magill slammed a two-run home run to lead No. 22 UMass softball to a 3-0 victory over Boston University in the home opener at the UMass Softball Complex on Wednesday afternoon. Magill finished the day 3-for-3 and Sarah Reeves added a RBI single as the Minutewomen won their eighth game in a row.
Plourde (22-5), the nation's leader in strikeouts, recorded her ninth shutout of the season and eighth game of 15 or more strikeouts. She allowed just two hits and walked none.
Besides Magill's three-hit performance, Whitney Williams was 2-for-3 and scored a run, while Carly Normandin, Katie Bettencourt, and Reeves recorded a hit apiece.
UMass scored all of its runs in the third inning with two outs. Williams started the rally with a single to center, followed by Magill hitting her fifth home run of the season, opposite field to left. After Bettencourt doubled to right center, Reeves pulled a lined shot off the fence in left field to bring in the third run. The senior third baseman leads the team with 21 RBIs.
Cassidi Hardy (11-4) took the loss for BU, allowing all three runs on six hits and two walks. Whitney Tuthill pitched the final two innings for the Terriers, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out one.
BU's April Setterlund, the nation's leading hitter at .595 entering the week, was 1-for-3 in the game, striking out and flying out before singling through the right side in her final at-bat.
The Minutewomen, 6-0 in conference play, continue their homestand on Friday and Saturday with Atlantic 10 games against Charlotte, 4-0 in the A-10, at the UMass Softball Complex. First pitch on Friday is set for 3 p.m. and Saturday's contest begins at noon.
