BOSTON, Mass. - A pair of senior bats led No. 21 UMass softball (26-7) to a 7-5 victory over Boston University (20-14) on Tuesday afternoon at the BU Softball Field as Sarah Reeves hit two home runs and Michelle Libby blasted a three-run homer to lead the Minutewomen to their 11th win in a row. Meghan Carta added a home run in a game that featured five total round-trippers.
Reeves was 3-for-3 on the day as her two home runs, one in the fourth inning and one in the sixth, to run her season total to six. The senior first baseman has 26 home runs in her career, tying her with Brandi Cross and Scooter Wheeler for fifth all-time at UMass.
Libby delivered the big blow for UMass, a three-run home run in the second inning, her sixth of the season. The senior left fielder finished 2-for-3 in the game.
Teea Rogers preceded Libby's blast by putting the first run of the game on the board in the top of the second with a RBI single to center field. The hit came with two outs and after a 10-pitch at-bat in which the freshman fouled off four pitches with two strikes.
Reeves and Carta made it a 6-0 game in the top of the fourth inning when they hit consecutive pitches by BU starter Whitney Tuthill (6-3) over the center field fence.
BU got on the board in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run to left field by Tuthill, but the Terriers' big inning came in the fifth when two walks and a single set the stage for April Setterlund's grand slam to right field that made it a one-run game, 6-5.
Reeves' second home run of the game, a one-out solo shot to left in the sixth inning gave UMass an insurance run, 7-5.
Sara Plourde (25-5) got the win in the circle, despite the Terriers scoring a season-high five earned runs off the right-hander. She allowed eight hits and walked three while striking out nine, running her NCAA-leading strikeout total to 376.
The Minutewomen continue their road swing this weekend, playing at UConn on Friday in a 4 p.m. game before heading to Olean, N.Y. to take on St. Bonaventure in a Atlantic 10 doubleheader on Sunday at noon.
