Roswess Nets Pair In 3-0 Exhib. Win Over Winstars

AMHERST, Mass. - Chris Roswess tallied a pair of goals and Ben Arikian had a pair of assists as the UMass men's soccer team defeated the Winstars Academy 3-0 on Sunday in an exhibition match at Rudd Field. Shane Curran-Hays and Chris Piekos combined for the shutout in goal. The Minutemen will return to action on Saturday afternoon at Siena (1 PM).
UMass (1-1-3) came off a 1-0 win at Northeastern on Saturday night. The Minutemen took control of the friendly match early in the first half going into intermission with a 2-0 lead and a 17-to-3 advantage in shots.
Scott Strycharz opened the scoring with a goal at the 18:04 mark of the first half. Arikian played a ball into the 18-yard box finding Mark DeSantis near the right post. DeSantis drew the Winstars keeper towards the right before firing a shallow cross back towards the middle of the goal where Strycharz poked home the goal into an empty net.
With 39 seconds remaining in the first half, Roswess netted his first goal of the game on a corner kick that was taken by Arikian. He added his second goal in the 68th minute of play.
Curran-Hays earned the start for UMass and was forced to make just one save in the first half. Piekos played the second half but was not forced into action.
The Minutemen finished the game with a 23-to-7 advantage in shots and a 4-to-1 edge in corner kicks.
Spyros Stergiotis made seven first half saves allowing two goals for the Winstars, while Bryndon Fry played the second half making one save and allowing one goal.
