Hernandez & Puerto Rico At Pan Am Qualifier

AMHERST, Mass. - Recent UMass softball alum Davina Hernandez will be competing with the Puerto Rico National Team at the Pan American Softball Qualifying Tournament in Maracay, Venezuela beginning on Friday. Hernandez is the second UMass player from the 2009 senior class participating in the tournament as Brandice Balschmiter is a member of Team USA.
Herrnandez, whose grandparents were born in Puerto Rico, has been involved with the Puerto Rican National Team since 2007. She competed at the Olympic Qualifier in Valencia, Venezuela that year, as well as at the Canada Cup in Surrey, British Columbia and the Pan American Games in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.
The Pan Am Qualifying Tournament begins with pool play on July 31 and runs through the August 9 medal games. The Pan Am Games are scheduled for October 2011 in Guadalajara, Mexico. The tournament also serves as qualifier for the 2010 Softball World Championship, to be held in Oklahoma City next July.
Hernandez finished her UMass career in 2009 with her finest season. She started 46 of the teams 51 games in right field. She hit three home runs and scoring 25 runs on the year, while ranking third on the club in stolen bases with six. She doubled and scored the games lone run in UMass' 1-0 victory over defending national champion Arizona State in February. In all, Hernandez appeared in 159 games of the course of her career.
The Bristol, Conn. native graduated in May with a degree in communication disorders and will be attending graduate school in the fall.
