UMass Suffers 15-1 Defeat To No. 18 Loyola

AMHERST, Mass. - After UMass took a 1-0 lead thanks Evan Blum's fifth goal of the season with 6:12 left in the first period, #18 Loyola scored 15 unaswered goals to hand UMass a 15-1 loss on Saturday afternoon at Garber Field. It was a defensive battle early on with the score tied, 1-1, after one period of play, but the Greyhounds piled up seven goals in the second quarter to take control of the game. UMass fals to 2-5 overall and 0-1 in the ECAC. Loyola is now 4-3 and 3-0 in the league.
Loyola was led by Shane Koppens, who piled up four points on a goal and three assists. Collin Finnerty was one of three players with two goals in the game. He was joined by Jimmy Daly and Tyler Gale with a pair of tallies.
Nine other players scored once for the Greyhounds.
UMass was outshot 32-28 and out-groundballed 31-25 by Loyola. The Greyhounds won 11 of the 19 face-offs.
The loss was the worst home defeat in UMass lacrosse program history. Previously, UMass lost to Dartmouth, 14-2 on May 22, 1965. The one goal scored equalled the lowest since an 8-1 defeat to Brown on April 11, 1964.
UMass continues action in the ECAC next Saturday at Penn State. Action gets underway at 12 noon in State College. The game can be heard on 100.9 FM WRNX.
