CLEARWATER, Fla. - Junior pitcher Brandice Balschmiter pitched her second shutout of the tournament as the Massachusetts softball team clamps Florida International 2-0 on Sunday at the USF Under Armour Classic. Junior Sam Salato hit her second home run of the season as the Minutewomen improve to 8-10 on the year.
Senior Stacy Cullington and sophomore Whitney Williams went 2-for-3 in the game.
UMass got on board first for the third time in the tournament on a double to deep centerfield by Cullington in the third inning that scored classmate Lauren Proctor from first base. Proctor singled to center on the previous at-bat to put herself on base.
Salato put Umass up 2-0 in the next inning with a home run over the left field wall off FIU pitcher Kasey Barrett. With the blast, Salato broke out of a 0-for-10 slump for her second home run of the year.
Balschmiter was near flawless in the outing as she evens her record to 6-6 on the season. Balschmiter gave up no runs on three hits while striking out seven for her third shutout of the season.
