Softball Ranked No. 23 In USA Today/NFCA Preseason Poll

AMHERST, Mass. -- The Massachusetts softball team has been ranked No. 23 in the USA Today/NFCA preseason top 25 poll that was released Wednesday. This marks the first time that the Minutewomen have received a preseason ranking since 2003 when they were 25th. It is the highest preseason ranking the team has earned since it was 16th in 2000. UMass is coming off a 41-16 2006 season where it advanced to the school's first-ever Super Regional and took eventual national runner-up Northwestern to a decisive third game in their best-of-three series. The Minutewomen were ranked No. 24 in the final poll of the season.
UMass opens up the 2007 season Feb. 9-11 at the Campbell/Cartier Tournament in San Diego, Calif. The Minutewomen will play five straight games against teams from the 2006 NCAA Tournament in San Diego State, UC-Santa Barbara, Oregon State, California and Kansas.
