Softball Hosts Temple Saturday At Noon

WHAT'S ON TAP... UMass (21-12, 9-1 A-10) hosts Temple (13-17, 6-2 A-10) for a doubleheader this afternoon at Noon. The Minutewomen are coming off a pair of shutouts against Saint Joseph's on Thursday, 5-0 and 8-0 in six innings. The Owls, meanwhile, swept Rhode Island on the road. UMass leads the all-time series against Temple, 57-14.
HOT AT HOME... While Massachusetts saw its 73 game home winning streak come to an end in the 2004 A-10 Tournament, the Minutewomen are still 106-9-1 (.918) all-time at the UMass Softball Complex. A-10 Dominance... UMass has put up some impressive numbers en route to its 9-1 conference record. The Minutewomen have outscored their league foes, 72-9, and out-hit them .380-.123. Six of the seven games have been shutouts and UMass pitchers Brandice Balschmiter and Jenna Busa have allowed just four earned runs in 62 innings for a miniscule 0.45 ERA. Balschmiter has 54 strikeouts, an average of 1.3 an inning and 9.2 per game. Balschmiter has three one-hitters, while Busa has a no-hitter (March 31 at La Salle). The UMass offense has racked up 20 doubles, two triples, 12 home runs, 64 RBI, 20 stolen bases and a 1.051 OPS (on-base pct. plus slugging pct.).
TID-BITS... Whitney Mollica needs just three more RBI to tie the all-time single-season record at UMass (45) ... she is also two home runs shy of tying the freshman record (9)... KJ Kelley is now 15 RBI behind Scooter Wheeler for first-place all-time on the school's charts (148) ... Brandice Balschmiter is currently seventh on the all-time single-season strikeout list with 176 ... Balschmiter is first in the A-10 in ERA and strikeouts and is averaging 1.1 k's per inning ... UMass pitching has gone 30.2 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run.
