Kelley, Mollica Earn A-10 Weekly Awards

AMHERST, Mass. -- In the latest round of Atlantic 10 Weekly awards, Massachusetts senior catcher KJ Kelley (Rainier, Ore.) was named the Co-Player of the Week, while freshman third baseman Whitney Mollica (Windham, N.H.) was tabbed the Rookie of the Week for the fourth time this season. The duo are being honored for their performances in UMass doubleheader sweep at George Washington (9-0, 6-0) to open up the conference slate last Friday.

Kelley batted a team-high .833 and was on base in seven of her eight plate opportunities as UMass opened up A-10 play with a sweep at George Washington. She was 5-for-6 at the plate with three runs scored, two home runs and three RBI. She also walked once and was hit by a pitch. Kelley compiled a 1.833 slugging percentage and an .875 on-base percentage. She hit two home runs in game two against the Colonials. That tied a UMass single-game record and was the fifth time she has gone deep twice in a single-game. Her two home runs were part of four UMass dingers against GW tying a school single-game record. It was the fourth time in its history that UMass went deep four times in a single game. She shared the honor with Katie Davis of Fordham.

Mollica was second on the team with a .571 batting average as UMass swept a pair of games at GW to open up A-10 play. Mollica was 4-for-7 at the plate with a run scored, a home run, four RBI, a walk and a stolen base. She posted a 1.000 slugging percentage and a .625 on-base percentage. Mollica's home run was one of four UMass long ball in the second game of the doubleheader. That tied a school record. It was the fourth time in its history, that UMass went deep four times in one game. Mollica was flawless in the field as well for both games.

The Minutewomen will host Dartmouth Wednesday in the home opener at the UMass Softball Complex. Game one of the doubleheader is set for 2:00 PM. Admission is free.
