Kevin Burns Named UMass Men's Lacrosse Assistant Coach

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts has announced the hiring of Kevin Burns as an assistant men's lacrosse coach. Burns comes to the Minutemen after serving as an assistant at Binghamton University from 2004-06. He previously served as an assistant at Wagner College and at various lacrosse camps. He played his collegiate lacrosse for nationally-ranked Loyola College and starred in high school at West Genesee.
"Kevin brings great experience to the UMass men's lacrosse program," said head coach Greg Cannella, who was named the 2006 USILA National Coach of the Year after leading UMass to the National Championship game. "Kevin has worked under some great coaches in his career such as Mike Messere, Dave Cottle and Ed Stephenson. His wealth of experience will benefit our players and staff. I look forward to working with him at UMass."
At UMass, Burns will work with assistant coach Jake Coon on the defensive side of the ball. Coon was elevated to the top assistant position after Jason Miller took over as the head coach at St. John's University in September. Burns will handle UMass' video coordination and various other administrative tasks in addition to recruiting.
At Binghamton, Burns helped the Bearcats to their highest-ever ranking in 2006 at No. 16. He served as the defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator under head coach Ed Stephenson. Binghamton finished last season as the 14th-ranked defense in the nation and ranked No. 1 in the America East in man-down defense. Burns worked with the Bearcats academic programs as well in overseeing the team which posted the best team GPA in men's lacrosse program history at the New York school.
Prior to Binghamton, Burns served as an assistant coach at Wagner College in Staten Island, N.Y., from 2003-04. He also served as the defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator for the Seahawks.
Burns has worked as a coach at various lacrosse camps across the nation including: Top 205 in College Park, Md.; Princeton Lacrosse Camp; Shove Park Lacrosse Camp in Camillus, N.Y.; Loyola Lacrosse Camp in Baltimore, Fallston (Md.) Lacrosse Camp and Navy Lacrosse Camp in Annapolis.
He was a four-year defenseman at Loyola College, graduating in 2003 with the Bachelor of Arts in History. During his time with the Greyhounds, the team reached the No. 1 ranking nationally and entered the 2000 NCAA playoffs as the No. 1 seed. Loyola also advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals in 2001.
Burns was a star at West Genesee High School in upstate New York where the Wildcats were the No. 1 team in the nation winning a New York State championship his junior year. They won 47 games in a row over the course of two seasons.
