UMass Softball Well Represented At Canada Cup

SURREY, British Columbia. -- Four member of the University of Massachusetts softball team are currently participating in the 12th annual Canada Softball Cup. Current players KJ Kelley (Rainier, Ore.), Kristi Stefanoni (Columbus, N.J.) and Amanda Morin (Worcester, Mass.) are all playing for the Washington Blast team. Current assistant coach and former UMass pitcher Kaila Holtz is a member of the Canadian National Team. In pool play, she went 4-0 with a 0.00 ERA.

Holtz and Team Canada went 6-1 in pool play and will now play China in the championship round. Holtz was 4-0 with a 0.00 ERA during pool play. She allowed just three runs, all unearned, on 15 hits and six walks in 28 innings. She struck out 21 batters.

On July 2 against China-Beijing, Holtz pitched a four-hit shutout. She did not walk a batter and struck out two. In her next start, a 4-2 win over the Dominican Republic on July 3, Holtz recorded a complete-game victory. She scattered three hits and allowed two unearned runs. Holtz, who walked two and struck out seven, worked around five Team Canada errors. Holtz then picked up a complete-game victory against Triple Crown Colorado on July 5. She yielded one unearned run on on one hit and three walks. She fanned seven batters again. Holtz concluded pool play with a seven-hit shutout (2-0) over New Zealand on July 7. She walked just one and fanned five.

Kelley, Morin and Stefanoni each saw significant playing time for the Washington Blast in pool play. The Blast went 2-6 and did not make the championship round. Kelley recorded five hits, two doubles, one run scored, two RBI and one walk. She saw playing time at both catcher and third base. Both Morin and Stefanoni played in the outfield. Morin recorded one hit, while Stefanoni had a hit, RBI and a walk.

Here is Team Canada's schedule for the championship round. Following this competition, Holtz and Canada will next participate in the World Cup of Softball in Oklahoma City, Okla., July 14-18.
