INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Chris Gabrielli, a three-year assistant coach and former stand-out player at the University of Massachusetts, has been named the top assistant at Butler, head coach Stan Ross announced on July 15. In his new position, Gabrielli will be involved in all aspects of the Butler program. He will serve as the recruiting coordinator and work primarily with Butler's defensive unit.
"We're fortunate to have someone with Chris' credentials taking over our defense," said Ross, who enters his second season on the Butler sidelines. "With his playing and coaching experience, and recruiting ties in Long Island, Chris is a great addition to our program."
In his three seasons on Greg Cannella's staff at UMass, Gabrielli's primary duties included working with the defense, man-down and face-off units, as well as recruiting. He also served as the director of the Mid-Summer Classic, a high school lacrosse tournament held at UMass which he co-founded in 2004 with UMass assistant coach Jason Miller. Gabrielli served as a member of the practice player squad for the Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse during the 2004 season, before being drafted again by the Cannons in the 2005 Supplemental Draft in the 14th round.
Before joining the coaching staff in 2002, he spent the previous year as the Director of Ticket Sales for the Boston Cannons.
In four years at Massachusetts, Gabrielli dished out five assists and collected 127 ground balls as a top defender. During his senior year in 2001, he was named a second-team All-Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) selection as well as first-team All-New England honoree. UMass shared the league title and captured the New England championship during his senior season.
Gabrielli won the Eric Sopracasa "Heart and Soul" Award in 2000 and 2001, which is given to the UMass player who displays the most leadership and dedication to the team. He also was a team captain during his senior year and played in the 2001 North-South game. He was invited to the Major League Lacrosse Top 40 Seniors camp following his final season. He also earned second-team All-New England honors as a sophomore in 1999.
Gabrielli graduated in 2001 from Massachusetts with a degree in sport management.
He is engaged to his sweetheart Candace and will be married later this summer.
