VICTORIA, British Columbia - For the fifth straight year, former Massachusetts pitcher and current assistant coach Kaila Holtz has been named to the Canadian National Softball Team. Holtz was just selected to the xx-person squad following a senior selection camp June 21-26. Earlier in the month, Holtz went 1-1 with a 1.88 ERA in three appearances at the International Sports Invitational held just outside of San Diego, Calif. She allowed just three earned runs on seven hits in 14.1 innings pitched. Holtz walked five and struck out 13.

Holtz and Team Canada will now prepare for the upcoming Canada Cup, July 1-11, in Surrey, British Columbia. The next event after that will be the World Cup of Softball in Oklahoma City, Okla. Several of those games will be broadcast on ESPN and ESPN2. Check back to www.umassathletics.com as the event comes closer for updates on which games will be televised.

Holtz has been a member of the Canadian National Team for the past four seasons. Last year, she was in Athens, Greece for the Summer Olympics. At the 2003 Pan American Games, Holtz and Team Canada won the Silver Medal. In four years on the UMass mound, Holtz went 75-25 with a 1.40 ERA. Her 75 career victories rank fourth all-time in school history while her ERA is ninth-lowest. Holtz tossed 92 complete games, including 35 shutouts, both good for second-best on the school's all-time chart. She hurled five career no-hitters and one perfect game. Holtz fanned 596 batters in her four years to also rank second in school history. She was a two-time Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Year, three-time NFCA All-Region selection, three-time A-10 All-Tournament team member and the MVP of the 2002 A-10 Championship. Off the field, Holtz was a three-time Verizon Academic All-District first team member and was a first-team Academic All-American in 2003. She was among the recipients of an NCAA and Atlantic 10 Postgraduate Scholarship. She also compiled a .276 career batting average. She recorded 34 doubles, two triples, 11 home runs and 104 RBI. Holtz is currently pursuing her master's degree in Exercise Science at UMass.
