Barb LaFogg Named Assistant Softball Coach

AMHERST, Mass. -- University of Massachusetts head softball coach Elaine Sortino has announced the hiring of former pitcher Barb LaFogg to the position of assistant coach. LaFogg joins another former UMass pitcher, Kaila Holtz, as Sortino's assistants. In two years at UMass, LaFogg was 21-11 with a 2.12 ERA.
In 2005, LaFogg was a first-team Atlantic 10 All-Conference member as well as second-team NFCA All-Region pick. She was also voted by the league's sports information directors as the A-10 Scholar Athlete of the Year.
For her career, LaFogg went 21-11 in the circle with a 2.12 ERA. She limited opponent's to a .197 batting average and ranks 10th all-time with 233 strikeouts. She made 41 appearances, started 31 games, had 21 complete games and six shutouts. LaFogg capped her senior season by throwing her first career no-hitter on Senior Day, May 8, against Quinnipiac. The only base runner she allowed came via a walk. LaFogg also threw four, one-hit shutouts. On March 31 against Dartmouth, she lost a perfect game on the last batter, but still struck out a career-high 15 batters in that game. The 15 k's was also a UMass Softball Complex record. LaFogg compiled a 4.02 strikeout to walk ratio and fanned 1.2 batters per inning. She tallied nine double-digit strikeout games in 2005. Her 212 strikeouts in 2005 rank as the fourth-most in a UMass single-season.
Prior to UMass, LaFogg went to Seton Hall University. She is a native of Williamsburg, Mass., and was a four-year letterwinner at Hampshire Regional High School.
