ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - The UMass softball team (24-12-1, 9-3 A-10) took a pair of games from St. Bonaventure this afternoon in New York, 9-1 and 7-1. Junior KJ Kelley (Rainier, Ore.) reached base in all seven of her plate appearances on the day while senior Hilary Puglia (Stoneham, Mass.) smashed a homer in each game to tie Kelley for the team lead.
In game one, the Bonnies took an early 1-0 lead after the first inning. UMass responded with six runs of their own in the top of the second, capped by a two-run triple from senior Denise Denis (Middle Grove, N.Y.). Puglia added on to the lead in the fifth inning with her first home run of the day, a two-run shot.
Denis went 3-for-4 in the game with a double and a triple, Puglia went 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Kelley, freshman Lauren Proctor (Redmond, Wash.), and freshman Stacy Cullington (Encinitas, Calif.) all had two hits apiece.
On the mound, senior Barb LaFogg (Williamsburg, Mass.) allowed just one run on five hits while punching out seven and walking none.
The Minutewomen took game two easily, 7-1, before the game was called due to rain. UMass was able to push across at least one run in every inning except the fourth. The Minutewomen were held to just five hits, but eight walks and five wild pitches from Bonnies pitcher Brianna Bricker proved to be a difference.
Kelley went 2-for-2 in the game, while Puglia cracked her second two-run homer of the day. Proctor recorded a hit in each game and notched a double in game two, extending her hitting streak to 14 games. Junior Jenna Busa (Lexington, Mass.) allowed three hits in the game while walking three and striking out six. The run she allowed was unearned.
The Minutewomen are back in action on Sunday, April 24 when they host NC State in a non-conference doubleheader at the Softball Complex. Game one is scheduled for a noon start.
