IRVINE, Calif. - Former Massachusetts softball pitcher and current assistant coach Kaila Holtz threw 13.2 scoreless innings in four appearances as Team Canada placed second at the Champions Cup. Holtz did not allow a run while scattering 12 hits, walking one and fanning 14 in the tournament.
In Canada's 2-1 win over Venezuela in the semifinals, Holtz entered the game with runners at the corners and one out, but struck out two batters in a row to get out of the jam.
Canada then lost to Australia in the championship game to finish the tournament in second place.
The Champions Cup is one of three tournaments which Team Canada is using to prepare for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece next month. They will now play The Cougars of Illinois and Venezuela today.
