AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts lacrosse player Steven Byrnes (Mahopac, N.Y.) was named the ECAC Defensive Player of the Week for his role in UMass' 16-4 win over Manhattan last Friday night. It marks the third straight week that a Minuteman player has been named a weekly winner by the ECAC.
Byrnes keyed a solid defensive effort for the Minutemen, shutting out Manhattan for the final 37:42 contest, marking the second time this season that UMass has shut out an opponent in the second half. He scooped up five ground balls, and he and his teammates held the Jaspers to only two shots the entire second half. The long-stick defenseman also scored a key goal, his first of the season, to jumpstart a 14-0 UMass run. For the season, Byrnes has two points (1 g, 1 a) and scooped up 24 grounds balls in nine games.
Byrnes and his teammates will travel to Yale on Saturday, April 17, for a 1:00 p.m. faceoff against the Bulldogs.
