PHOENIX, Ariz---The Massachusetts softball team fell to No. 14 Stanford, 2-1, and No.10 Cal State Fullerton, 3-1, on Friday afternoon at the Fiesta Bowl Tournament in Phoenix, Ariz.

In their first game of the season the Minutewomen lost by a run to Stanford at the Rose Mofford Sports Complex. Kaila Holtz (North Vancouver, British Columbia) took the mound for UMass, giving up eight hits and two runs while striking out two batters.

Emily Robustelli (Stamford, Conn.) scored UMass' lone run of the game. She was able to score when Hilary Puglia (Stoneham, Mass.) was able to put the ball in play and knock her in to narrow the margin between the Minutewomen and Stanford.

In the second game of the afternoon, UMass fell to Cal State Fullerton, 3-1. Kelli Arnold (Kalama, Wash.) pitched for the Minutewomen, giving up eight hits and three runs in six innings of work. Robustelli again scored the lone run of the game for Massachusetts, using another Puglia RBI to cross the plate.

Massachusetts will take on No. 4 Nebraska and Texas Tech on Saturday afternoon in the second day of the Fiesta Bowl Tournament
