Greg Cannella Repeats as New England Coach of the Year

AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts head coach Greg Cannella was named New England Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season, and senior Marc Morley (Canton, N.Y.), junior Kevin Leveille (Delmar, N.Y.) and senior Matt McFarland (Garden City, N.Y.) were all named first team All-New England. In addition, juniors Chris Fiore (Freeport, N.Y.) and Tom Fallon (Shaker Heights, Ohio) were named to the second team. The Minutemen captured their 18th New England championship and second in a row, after finishing the 2002 regular season with an 11-3 overall record and ranked seventh nationally.
Cannella led the Minutemen to the outright ECAC Lacrosse title with a perfect 5-0 league record, including a 16-13 victory over previously undefeated Georgetown on April 20, in Washington, D.C. The Minutemen and Hoyas were co-champions last season, and the Hoyas were outright champions in the innagural ECAC season in 2000. Cannella is in his eighth season at the helm of the program and has a 64-43 (.598) career record. The Minutemen finished the regular season with an 11-3 overall record. Massachusetts has the nation's second highest scoring offense heading into the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament, averaging 14.27 goals per game.
Morley, an attackman, leads the team in points (50), goals (37) and is second in assists (13). Leveille, a midfielder, is third on the team in points (45), and third in goals (33) and tied for third in assists (12). McFarland leads the team in ground balls with 99 and has scored four goals and four assists as a defender. Fiore, who was named to the second team, is fourth on the team in points (41), goals (30) and is sixth in assists (12). Fallon, a defender who was also named to the second team, is a key member of a defensive unit that is limiting opponents to fewer than 10 goals per game.
The Minutemen, who defeated Fairfield 17-4 in the first round, face top-seeded Johns Hopkins in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament this Sunday at Homewood Field in Baltimore, Md. Game time is set for 12:00 noon. It will mark the eighth appearance in the quarterfinals for Massachusetts. The Minutemen have never advanced to the semifinals.
