Softball Heads To Lafayette, La., For NCAA Regional Tournament

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts softball team will be travelling to Lafayette, La., for the NCAA Regional Tournament, beginning on Thursday, May 16. The No. 4 seed Minutewomen will face tournament host and No. 3 Louisiana-Lafayette (48-11) in the first round at 5:00 p.m., CST.
Massachusetts won its eighth consecutive Atlantic 10 Championship title on Saturday in Kingston, R.I., by defeating Rhode Island twice, 6-1 and 8-0. UMass takes a 52-11 record into its eighth straight regional tournament and its 12th tournament overall. Last season, the Minutewomen defeated North Carolina, 4-2, in the regional tournament before dropping two games to Washington, 8-0 and 7-1.
Others teams competing in regional number three include No. 1 LSU (53-9), No. 2 Arizona State (40-18), No. 5 Mississippi State (35-29) and No. 6 Northwestern State (45-23). The winner of the regional tournament will advance to the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City, Okla., May 22-27. UMass has made three appearances to the WCWS, with the most recent occurring in 1998.
