Massachusetts Softball Loses To UMKC, 3-2.

MIAMI, Fla. - The University of Massachusetts softball team fell just short to the University of Missouri-Kansas City, 3-2, this afternoon in day two of the Blue & Gold Classic.
UMass jumped out to a quick, 1-0, lead in the first inning as senior Scooter Wheeler (Kingsburg, Calif.) drove home senior Teri Rooney (Visalia, Calif.) from second base. Rooney reached base on a bunt single and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior Brandi Cross (Diamond Bar, Calif.). Wheeler's RBI shot ricocheted off of UMKC's pitcher, allowing Rooney to slide safely into home.
The Kangaroos answered in the bottom of the second inning, utilizing a poke to shallow right field, two walks and two UMass errors to score three runs and take the, 3-1, advantage.
The Minutewomen cut into UMKC's lead in the third frame as junior Kaila Holtz (North Vancouver, British Columbia) ripped a line drive into right field, scoring Rooney. Rooney opened the UMass rally, as she drew a walk and moved to second on a Wheeler single up the middle. Holtz delivered the RBI line drive over the infield to bring UMass to within one, 3-2.
Massachusetts was unable to over take the Kangaroo's lead, despite eight hits, as it stranded nine runners on the day. Holtz gets the loss as she allowed three hits, three walks and struck out five. UMKC's Lindsay Davis earns the win as she scattered eight UMass hits, two walks and fanned seven.
UMass dips to 11-9 on the season, while the Kangaroos improve to 9-13. The Minutewomen look to redeem themselves with a noon game against Fordham this afternoon.
