TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The University of Massachusetts softball team defeated Southern Illinois, 3-1, this afternoon in the consolation final of the Gold Bracket at the Seminole Classic.
The Saluki's scored first on three walks and a UMass error to take the early, 1-0, lead in the second inning.
The Minutewomen came back in the bottom of the sixth inning, stringing together three singles and capitalizing on a Saluki error to go ahead, 3-1. Senior Ashley Bakken (Phoenix, Ariz.) and junior Emily Robustelli (Stamford, Conn.) followed with back-to-back bunt singles to load the bases. Junior Brandi Cross (Diamond Bar, Calif.) laced a ball into left field that tipped off the left fielder's glove and rolled to the fence, scoring three runs.
Jennifer Hadley (Bristol, Conn.) recorded the win of UMass, striking out seven Southern Illinois batters and allowing no earned runs. She finished the tournament with a 2-1 record on the mound and a team-low 0.38 ERA.
