AMHERST, Mass. - Junior Jeff Deren (Chicopee, Mass.) continued his offensive onslaught as he scored two goals and assisted on another to lead the University of Massachusetts' men's soccer team to a 7-0 win over Maine here on Saturday. With the win, UMass moves to 4-2 on the year, while the Black Bears fall to 1-3 on the campaign.

Deren and sophomore Ptah Myers (Columbus, Ohio) each scored twice in the contest, while juniors Yuri Morales (Santa Cruz, Calif.) and Derek Rhodes (DePere, Wis.) and freshman Gabe Barnard (Williamsburg, Mass.) each added a goal in the win.

The Minutemen took control early in the contest, as Rhodes scored on a give-and-go from Deren in the game's 12th minute. Four minutes later, Myers drove past two defenders and netted UMass' second goal. Deren then scored his fourth and fifth goals of the season merely ten minutes apart to give the Maroon and White a commanding 4-0 lead heading into halftime.

UMass kept the offensive pressure on in the second period, as Morales scored on a perfectly-placed through ball from junior John Lytton (Madison, Miss.) ten minutes into the half. Myers added his second of the contest in the 60th minute, and Barnard scored the first goal of his career in the 79th minute.

The seven-goal outburst marked the first time since Oct. 3, 1999 (vs. St. Joseph's) that UMass had scored more than five goals in a game.

UMass will continue its four-game homestand as they open Atlantic 10 play against Rhode Island next Saturday at Totman Field. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
