AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts' men's soccer team dropped a tough 3-2 decision in double overtime to Rhode Island here on Saturday. With the loss, UMass falls to 4-3 on the season, 0-1 in Atlantic 10 action, while URI moves to 4-1-1, 1-0.
URI closed the hard-fought match when Patrick Rooney placed a shot just out of the reach of senior goalkeeper Bryan O'Quinn (Feeding Hills, Mass.) in the game's 110th minute. It was Rooney's second goal of the season.
The Minutemen scored the contests opening goal as junior Jeff Deren (Chicopee, Mass.) netted his sixth goal of the season in the 17th minute.
After nearly 60 minutes of scoreless action following that goal, URI tied the contest when Sasha Gotsmanov ended O'Quinn's 300-minute shutout streak.
UMass regained the lead 10 minutes later as Max Wolf (Shaker Heights, Ohio) scored his first goal of the season in the 86th minute to put the Minutemen up 2-1. The Rams answered quickly as Dennis Richards drew a foul in the penalty box just 16 seconds after the UMass goal. Gareth Elliot capitalized on the ensuing penalty kick to tie the game at two goals apiece.
The Minutemen will continue their current homestand with a 3:30 p.m. match on Friday against A-10 foe Fordham at Totman Field.
