AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts softball team completed a perfect 21-0 Atlantic 10 regular season with a 2-0 win over Rhode Island this afternoon at the Umass Softball Complex. The Minutewomen also improved to 39-11 overall with the win, while the Rams fell to 28-28 on the year, and 10-11 in the A-10.

UMass, which managed only two hits in the game, scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning when freshman pinch runner KC Budrewicz (Buckland, Mass.) scored on a Rhode Island throwing error after Ashley Bakken (Phoenix, Ariz.) had singled. Budrewicz was running for Scooter Wheeler (Kingsburg, Calif.), who had walked to lead off the inning. The Minutewomen added an insurance run in the fifth inning when Bakken, who had walked, scored on a wild pitch.

Freshman Jamie Cahalan (Mesa, Ariz.) accounted for UMass' other hit when she singled in the second inning.

Sophomore righty Kaila Holtz (North Vancouver, BC) hurled the two-hit shutout for UMass, striking out five and walking none. She is now 12-1 on the year.

UMass closes out the regular season on Tuesday, May 8, when it hosts area rival UConn at the UMass Softball Complex. The single game is slated to begin at 5:00 p.m.
