PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The 23rd-ranked University of Massachusetts softball team swept a doubleheader from Brown this afternoon, 6-3 and 9-0, in Providence, R.I. The wins improve UMass to 36-11 on the year, while Brown closes out its 2001 season at 7-38-1.
In the opening game, UMass scored all six of its runs in the fourth inning after falling behind 3-0 to take the 6-3 win. The Minutewomen collected five hits in the inning, highlighted by senior Debbie Tomoguchi's (Irvine, Calif.) two-run double. Tomoguchi finished the day 2-for-3 with the two RBI and a run scored, while junior Ashley Bakken (Phoenix, Ariz.) was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Sophomore pitcher Kaila Holtz (North Vancouver, BC) improved her record to 11-1 on the mound, as she scattered four hits on the day while striking out seven.
In the nitecap, senior righty Carrie Jeffries (Placentia, Calif.) tossed a one-hit shutout as UMass won the five-inning contest, 9-0. Jeffries struck out five and walked none to improve to 11-4 on the year.
Offensively, the Minutewomen were led by sophomore Anna Perey (Chino Valley, Ariz.), who was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, and Bakken, who was also 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Junior Scooter Wheeler (Kingsburg, Calif.) smacked her sixth home run of the year in the top of the first, a three-run job, while classmate Teri Rooney (Visalia, Calif.) hit her second roundtripper of the season, a two-run shot in the second inning.
UMass returns to action on Saturday, May 5, when it hosts Atlantic 10 rival Rhode Island in a doubleheader beginning at 12 noon at the UMass Softball Complex.
