AMHERST, Mass. -- Nine University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse players were named either first or second team All-New England and Greg Cannella was named the New England Coach of the Year, it was announced today by the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association. The Minutemen, co-champions of the ECAC, finished the season with a 12-2 overall record and captured their 17th New England championship and first since 1997.

UMass claimed six of the 10 players that were named to the first team. Junior defender Matt McFarland (Garden City, N.Y.) was named to the first team for the second consecutive season. Joining McFarland on the first team were senior attackman Rick Kunkel (Centereach, N.Y.), senior midfielder John Madigan (Latham, N.Y.), senior midfielder Jeremy Guski (Mahopac, N.Y.), senior defender Chris Gabrielli (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and senior goaltender Chris Campolettano (Massapequa Park, N.Y.).

Junior attackman Marc Morley (Canton, N.Y.), sophomore midfielder Kevin Leveille (Delmar, N.Y) and sophomore defender Tom Fallon (Shaker Heights, Ohio) were all named to the second team.

McFarland finished the season with 37 groundballs and scored a goal and an assist for two points. Kunkel led UMass in scoring with 35 goals and 13 assists for 48 points. He ended his four-year career as the 12th all-time leading goal scorer in UMass history with 86 goals. Madigan finished the season with 15 goals and 12 assists for 27 points. He ended his career with 100 points. Guski finished the season with 14 goals and 12 assists for 26 points. He was a second team selection last season. Gabrielli was second on the team in ground balls with 47. He also recorded two assists. Campolettano ended the season with a 7.86 goals against average (ninth nationally) and a .627 save percentage (sixth nationally). He finished his career as the sixth all-time UMass leader in saves with 473. Campolettano was a second team selection last year.

Morley finished the season second on the team in goals with 29 and third in scoring with 37 points. Leveille was second on the team in scoring with 25 goals and 18 assists for 43 points. Fallon ended the season 25 ground balls and one goal.

In his seventh year at the helm of the Minutemen, Cannella led UMass to one of its best regular seasons in the program's storied history. The 12 victories is tied for the third most ever by a UMass team. Cannella helped to turn around a team that finished the 2000 season with a 6-8 record. The Minutemen ended the season in the top 10 in all seven of the statistical categories the NCAA keeps, including being first in man-down defense and second in scoring offense.
