UMass Softball Shuts Out Rhode Island, 8-0

DAYTON, Ohio -- Junior righty Jennifer Hadley (Bristol, Conn.) tossed a two-hit shutout as the 23rd-ranked University of Massachusetts downed the University of Rhode Island, 8-0, in six innings, in the opening game of the Verizon Atlantic 10 Championship at Stuart Field. UMass improves to 41-11 with the win, while Rhode Island fell to 28-29 with the loss.
UMass scored its first run in the bottom of the third inning, when Emily Robustelli (Stamford, Conn.) scored on Cherra Wheeler's (Kingsburg, Calif.) sacrifice fly. Robustelli had reached on a walk.
The Minutewomen added two runs in the fifth to go up 3-0, the first coming when Teri Rooney (Visalia, Calif.) doubled and then scored when Brandi Cross (Diamond Bar, Calif.) doubled her home. Cross scored later in the inning on a fielder's choice by Debbie Tomoguchi (Irvine, Calif.).
UMass' five runs in the sixth inning ended the game. The five runs came on the strength of five hits and a Ram error. Jamie Cahalan's (Mesa, Ariz.) RBI single that plated Wheeler provided the final run in the 8-0 victory.
Rooney was 3-for-3 in the game with an RBI and a run scored, while Robustelli finished the day 1-for-3 with two runs scored. Cross was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Wheeler added two hits, three RBI and a run scored in her two at-bats. Ashley Bakken (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Anna Perey (Chino Valley, Ariz.) each had two hits for UMass.
Hadley picked up her 17th win of the year on the mound for the Minutewomen, as she struck out four and walked none. She is now 17-6 on the year.
UMass faces the winner of the Temple-St. Joseph's game tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. with the winner moving to Saturday's Championship game. WHMP-AM 1400 in Northampton will broadcast all UMass games in the A-10 Tournament.
