Seven Men's Lacrosse Players Named All-ECAC

AMHERST, Mass. --Seven University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse players were named either first or second team All-ECAC and Greg Cannella was named the ECAC Coach of the Year it was announced today by the ECAC office. The Minutemen, co-champions of the ECAC, finished the season with a 12-2 overall record and a 5-1 league record.
Senior face-off man Jeff Seals (Long Valley, N.J.) and junior defender Matt McFarland (Garden City, N.Y.) were both named first team selections, while senior attackman Rich Kunkel (Centereach, N.Y.), sophomore midfielder Kevin Leveille (Delmar, N.Y.), junior midfielder Don Little (Clifton Park, N.Y.), senior defender Chris Gabrielli (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and senior goaltender Chris Campolettano (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) were all named to the second team.
Seals finished the season having won 199 of 316 (.630) faceoffs. He tied for sixth nationally in face-off winning percentage. Seals recorded 131 ground balls in 14 games, and his 9.36 ground balls per game average was second in the nation. He also scored eight goals and two assists for 10 points. McFarland, also a first team selection last year, finished the season with 37 groundballs and scored a goal and an assist for two points.
Kunkel led UMass in scoring with 35 goals and 13 assists for 48 points. He ended his four-year career as the 12th all-time leading goal scorer in UMass history with 86 goals. Kunkel was a second team selection last season. Leveille was second on the team in scoring with 25 goals and 18 assists for 43 points. Little was fourth on the team in scoring with 22 goals and five assists for 27 points. Gabrielli was second on the team in ground balls with 47. He also recorded two assists. Campolettano ended the season with a 7.86 goals against average (ninth nationally) and a .627 save percentage (sixth nationally). He finished his career as the sixth all-time career leader in saves with 473.
In his seventh year at the helm of the Minutemen, Cannella led UMass to one of its best regular seasons in the program's storied history. The 12 victories is tied for the third most ever by a UMass team. Cannella helped to turn around a team that finished the 2000 season with a 6-8 record. The Minutemen ended the season in the top 10 in all seven of the statistical categories the NCAA keeps, including being first in man-down defense and second in scoring offense.
