Softball Downs St. Bonaventure In Extra Innings, 7-2

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - Junior co-captain Teri Rooney (Visalia, Calif.) went 3-for-3 with a triple and an RBI as UMass defeated St. Bonaventure in eight innings, 7-2, to earn a sweep of the three-game weekend set with the Bonnies. The Minutewomen improved to 20-9 on the year with the win, and 6-0 in the Atlantic 10, while St. Bonaventure fell to 2-19 and 1-8 in the conference.
The Bonnies jumped out to a 2-1 lead after three innings, but UMass tied the game in the top of the fifth when sophomore Brandi Cross (Diamond Bar, Calif.) singled in classmate Emily Robustelli (Stamford, Conn.), who had reached on a throwing error.
Neither team could muster any offense over the next two innings, and the game went to extra innings where UMass scored five runs in the top half of the eighth to seal the victory. The Minutewomen are now 27-0 all-time versus the Bonnies.
Junior Scooter Wheeler (Kingsburg, Calif.) finished the game 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI, while classmate Ashley Bakken (Phoenix, Ariz.) smacked a two-run triple in the eighth.
UMass is next in action on Wednesday, April 11, when it travels to New Brunswick, N.J. to take on Rutgers. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
