AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts softball team ran its winning streak to 10 games with a 5-4 win over Boston College today at the UMas Softball Complex. The win moves UMass to 17-9 on the year, while Boston College falls to 16-15.
The Minutewomen got on the board first in the second inning when junior Scooter Wheeler (Kingsburg, Calif.) led off with her third home run of the year. The Eagles responded, however, with four runs in the top of the third to take a 4-1 lead.
UMass came back with two runs in the bottom of the third, as sophomore Brandi Cross (Diamond Bar, Calif.) hit a two-run double that scored freshman Nicole Wilson (Gaithersburg, Md.) and pinch runner Aisha Franke (Philadelphia, Pa.). Wilson had singled to lead off the inning followed by senior Debbie Tomoguchi `s (Irvine, Calif.) double.
Cross then knocked in the game-tying run in the sixth when she doubled to score sophomore Anna Perey (Chino Valley, Ariz.), who had singled. Sophomore Kaila Holtz (North Vancouver, BC) provided the game-winning heroics two batters later when she singled home Wheeler, who had walked. Holtz also went the distance on the mound for UMass, scattering seven hits while striking out three in her seven innings of work.
UMass returns to Atlantic 10 Conference action this weeked as it travels to Olean, N.Y. to take on St. Bonaventure. The Minutewomen will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 3:00 p.m., followed by a single game on Sunday at noon.
