STORRS, Conn. - Connecticut scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat the 22nd-ranked University of Massachusetts, 2-1, in softball action this afternoon at the UConn Softball Field. The loss halts UMass' school-record-tying consecutive wins streak at 24, and drops the Minutewomen to 31-10 overall (15-0 Atlantic 10). UConn improves to 24-18 with the win.

UMass got on the board in their first at-bat when Scooter Wheeler (Kingsburg, Calif.) smacked an RBI double to the wall in left center that scored Emily Robustelli (Stamford, Conn.), who had singled. But that was all the Minutewomen could muster against UConn starter Barb Cook, who would surrender only three hits the rest of the way.

UConn scored its two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on three singles and a UMass error to claim victory. Robustelli was the only Minutewomen who had multiple hits, as she went 2-for-3 on the day with two singles.

Carrie Jeffries (Placentia, Calif.) suffered the loss on the mound for UMass, as she went all seven innings, scattering five hits and striking out two. She is now 9-4 on the year.

UMass returns to action on Saturday and Sunday, April 28 and 29, as it travels to the Bronx, N.Y. to take on A-10 foe Fordham in a three-game series. The doubleheader on Saturday as well as the single game on Sunday begin at 12 noon.
