AMHERST, Mass. - Junior Teri Rooney (Visalia, Calif.) singled in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning of game one, and UMass went on to sweep both games from St. Joseph's, 3-2 and 8-2, at the UMass Softball Complex this afternoon. With the wins, UMass extended its winning streak to 19 games and improved to 25-9 on the year and 11-0 in the Atlantic 10. St. Joe's fell to 14-18-1 with the loss, and 5-6 in the conference.
Rooney's heroics in game one came after Anna Perey's (Chino Valley, Ariz.) sacrafice fly scored Aisha Franke (Philadelphia, Pa.) from third base to tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh. Franke was pinch running for Debbie Tomoguchi (Irvine, Calif.), who had singled earlier in the inning. Rooney then came up with the bases loaded, and delivered a single to left center that scored Ashley Bakken (Phoenix, Ariz.) with the winning run. Rooney was 2-for-3 in the game, while Bakken was 1-for-2 with two runs scored.
Jen Hadley (Bristol, Conn.) went the distance on the mound for UMass, scattering eight hits while striking out eight. Hadley is now 8-5 on the year.
In game two, UMass banged out 11 hits, including three each by Rooney and Cherra Wheeler (Kingsburg, Calif.), to preserve their 19th win in a row. Among Rooney's three hits was her first home run of the year, a three-run job in the sixth inning that provided the final margin of victory, 8-2. She knocked in four runs in the game. Wheeler was 3-for-3 on the day with an RBI, while Bakken was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and Emily Robustelli (Stamford, Conn.) had a double and scored three runs.
Carrie Jeffries (Placentia, Calif.) earned the win on the mound for UMass, as she went all seven innings to improve to 7-3 on the year. Jeffries allowed six hits and struck out five.
UMass concludes its three-game series with St. Joe's on Tuesday, April 17, in a 12 noon game at the UMass Softball Complex.
