AMHERST, Mass. -- Junior midfielder Rich Kunkel (Centereach, N.Y.), a member of the University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse team, has been named the ECAC Lacrosse Player of the Week for his performances against Rutgers and Brown last week. Kunkel scored seven goals in the two games, in addition to totaling six assists.
Kunkel began the week by recording five goals and one assist in the 16-11 victory over Rutgers on May 2. He then totaled two goals and a career-best five assists in the 14-10 loss to No. 16 Brown on May 6. His five assists against Brown are the most by a UMass player in a single game in six years, since Mike Valente had five assists in a 15-14 overtime victory over Army on May 7, 1994. In addition, Kunkel set a new season-high against Brown with seven points, and his five goals against Rutgers were his second-highest total of the year.
Kunkel finished the season with team-best totals of 28 goals and 15 assists for 43 points. The Minutemen had an overall record of 6-8 on the season, and finished fifth in the ECAC with a 2-4 conference record.
