AMHERST, Mass. - Freshman Kaila Holtz (North Vancouver, B.C.) went 4-for-6 with four RBI to lead the University of Massachusetts to a 3-1, 5-1 sweep of intra-state rival Boston College today in Amherst, Mass. The Minutewomen improve to 28-20 with the two victories, while the Eagles drop to 20-23 this season.
Both squads were held scoreless for the first three innings of the first game, before UMass seized a 3-0 lead in the fourth. Sophomore Teri Rooney (Visalia, Calif.) and freshman Brandi Cross (Diamond Bar, Calif.) both singled to start off the inning, leading the way for Holtz, who then connected on her first collegiate triple to plate both runs. Sophomore Cherra "Scooter" Wheeler (Kingsburg, Calif.) then hit a RBI-single, which drove in Holtz for the third run of the game. Boston College would only come up with one run in the game, as Chris Vicari singled in the sixth, driving in Summer Jarratt to the plate.
Sophomore Jen Hadley (Bristol, Conn.) went the distance on the mound, striking out four batters, while allowing six hits in seven innings pitched. Hadley improves to 8-6 this season with the win.
The Eagles got on the board first in the second game of the day, as Vicari pounded out a solo home run to lead off the second inning. Neither team scored for the next three innings, before the Minutewomen exploded with a five-run sixth inning. Boston College was tagged with three errors in the sixth, which allowed both senior Nikki Faessler (Milford, Mass.) and sophomore Ashley Bakken (Phoenix, Ariz.) to reach the plate. Cross then walked with the bases loaded, driving in junior Kiley Scofield (Murietta, Calif.). Holtz doubled for the final two runs, scoring both Rooney and freshman Anna Perey (Chino Valley, Ariz.).
Junior Carrie Jeffries (Placentia, Calif.) came away with the win for her seventh victory this season. Jeffries struck out eight batters, while allowing six hits in seven innings pitched.
UMass will next play host to Brown on May 4 for a doubleheader at 3 p.m.
