BRONX, N.Y. - Freshman Brandi Cross (Diamond Bar, Calif.) pounded out two home runs to lead the University of Massachusetts to a two-game sweep of Fordham today in Bronx, N.Y. The Minutewomen defeated the Rams, 12-1, 5-1, to improve to 20-19 this season and 6-2 in Atlantic 10 play.
Fordham got on the board first in game one, plating one run in the first inning off a RBI-single by Megan Georgvich. UMass scored two runs in the second inning, as sophomores Ashley Bakken (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Cherra Wheeler (Kingsburg, Calif.) both reached home plate, to put the Minutewomen on top, 2-1. UMass increased its advantage to seven with a six-run effort in the third inning. Cross connected on her fourth homer of the year, and Wheeler pounded out her second homer of the season, while plating freshman Kaila Holtz (North Vancouver, B.C.), as well, who doubled to center field earlier in the inning. Freshman Emily Robustelli (Stamford, Conn.) doubled to center field, driving in the final three runs of the inning. Freshman Anna Perey (Chino Valley, Ariz.), junior Debbie Tomoguchi (Irvine, Calif.) and Bakken all scored in the third. Cross homered again in the fourth for her fifth home run of the season, and UMass scored three more runs in the fifth inning to win the first game, 12-1. Cross doubled to left field, driving in Perey to the plate, and Holtz doubled to right field, scoring Cross and sophomore Teri Rooney (Visalia, Calif.).
Holtz picked up her 10th win this season in the victory, striking out seven batters, while allowing two hits in five innings pitched.
In game two, the Minutewomen jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first, as Holtz and Cross both scored off a triple to center field by Wheeler. UMass took a three-run lead in the fourth inning, as Holtz connected on her first collegiate home run. In the sixth inning, junior Kiley Scofield (Murietta, Calif.) reached on a passed ball to put UMass up 4-0, but the Rams would finally get on the board in the same inning off a RBI-single by Renee Little. But that would be the only run for Fordham in the game. The Minutewomen scored one more run in the seventh, as Wheeler singled to center field, driving in Cross to the plate.
Sophomore Jen Hadley (Bristol, Conn.) picked up the win on the mound, striking out four batters, while allowing six hits in seven innings pitched. Hadley now stands at 6-6 this season.
