TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Freshman Brandi Cross (Diamond Bar, Calif.) ripped a bases loaded single to right field with two outs in the fourth inning, leading UMass to a 6-3 win over Northen Iowa at the Florida State Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Minutewomen improved to 8-16 with the win.
The Minutewomen went up 1-0 in the top of the first inning and never looked back. Sophomore Ashley Bakken (Phoenix, Ariz.) scored the first of her two runs on the day in the first inning on an error after reaching on a single. UMass took advantage of two UNI errors in the second to go up 3-0 on the Panthers.
Cross put the Minutewomen up 5-0 with her double, scoring junior Rachel Parziale (Florence, Mass.) and freshman Emily Robustelli (Stamford, Conn.). Cross went two for four in the game with three RBI's and a run scored.
The Panthers scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run homer by Allison Taverner, and added another in the sixth on a UMass error. UMass came back with an insurance run in the top of the seventh when senior Nikki Faessler (Milford, Mass.) knocked a double to the fence in right-center, scoring Cross from second.
Sophomore Jen Hadley (Bristol, Conn.) went the distance for the win, improving to 3-5 on the year in the eight-hit performance. -UM-
