AMHERST, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse team scored nine second half goals en route to a 14-6 victory over Vermont this afternoon on Richard F. Garber Field. The Minutemen had 11 different goal scorers in the game and were led offensively by Rich Kunkel (Centereach, N.Y.), who netted three goals.

UMass opened the scoring when John Madigan (Latham, N.Y.) cut out from from behind the net and fired a high shot that found the back of the cage a little less than a minute into the game. At the 10:14 mark of the first quarter, Bradley Knapp scored for Vermont to knot the game 1-1. Vermont took the lead near the end of the first quarter when Kip Edwards scored on an extra man opportunity, but UMass tied it at 2-2 with 23 seconds left in the quarter when Kunkel scored his first goal of the game off a feed from Keith Gabrielli (Farmingdale, N.Y.).

The Minutemen grabbed a one-goal lead two and a half minutes into the second quarter on an unassisted goal from Gabrielli. Alex Racioppi (Winchester, Mass.) scored off a feed from Madigan to put UMass ahead 4-2, but the Catamounts continued to keep the game close as Doug Moses netted a goal at the 6:45 mark. The Minutemen took a 5-3 lead into the half thanks to an extra man opportunity goal from Don Little (Clifton Park, N.Y.) with under a minute to play in the second quarter.

UMass took control of the game in the second half, outscoring Vermont 9-3 after the intermission. The Minutemen opened the third quarter with four consecutive goals. Marc Morely (Canton, N.Y.), Mike Janowicz (Upper Arlington, Ohio), Jeremy Guski (Mahopac, N.Y.) and Kunkel scored the goals giving UMass a 9-3 lead. Edwards cut into the lead, scoring his second of the game, but Kunkel responded by netting his third goal on the afternoon to put UMass ahead 10-4 at the end of the third quarter.

Jeff Seals (Long Valley, N.J.) wasted little time in getting UMass on the board in the fourth quarter as he won the opening faceoff, raced toward the net and fired a shot that eluded Catamount goaltender Brenden Hall. Dusty Smith (West Chester, Pa.) followed with his first goal of the season to give UMass a 12-4 lead. Moses scored his second goal of the game on an extra man opportunity, before UMass netted two more scores. Kevin Dell (Huntington Station, N.Y.) added a goal to go along with his three assists, and Mike Young (Devon, Pa.) scored his first of the season to close out the scoring for UMass. Jessie McCarthy scored for the Catamounts with 2:43 remaining to make the final score 14-6.

Junior goaltender Chris Campolettano (Massapequa, N.Y.) made nine saves and senior Robert Murray (Rumsen, N.J.) made two in the UMass net, while Hall made 22 saves for the Catamounts.

The Minutemen are in action next when they travel to Indianapolis, Indiana for a non-league showdown against Butler on Saturday, March 25. Game time is 1:30 p.m.
