INDIANAPOLIS -- Sophomore midfielder Marc Morley (Canton, N.Y.) scored three goals and added three assists to lead the University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse team to a 12-9 victory over Butler this afternoon.
From the opening faceoff neither team could establish any sustained momentum. UMass opened the scoring on a goal by junior John Madigan (Latham, N.Y.) who fired home a pass from junior Keith Gabrielli (Farmingdale, N.Y.). The Bulldogs responded with a goal at the 6:33 mark of the first quarter.
UMass took a 2-1 lead early in the second quarter on a goal by senior Mike Janowicz (Upper Arlington, Ohio). The Bulldogs came right back when Doug Patterson netted his second goal of the game. The Minutemen then went on a four-goal run to open up a 6-2 lead. Morley scored his first of the game at the 9:04 mark of the second, followed by a Dan Paccione (Amityville, N.Y.) goal. Junior Alex Racioppi (Winchester, Mass.) scored to give UMass a 5-2 lead at the half. Morley opened the third quarter with a goal that gave the Minutemen a 6-2 lead.
Butler responded with two straight goals from Mike Regan to cut the UMass lead back to two with 10:05 remaining in the third quarter. Less than 30 seconds later, junior Jeff Seals (Long Valley, N.J.) scored off a feed from senior Tim Socha (Hackettstown, N.J.) to push the UMass lead back to three. Junior Jeremy Guski (Mahopac, N.Y.) scored off a Morley pass to put the Minutemen ahead 8-4.
The Bulldogs responded with a pair of goals near the end of the third to make the score 8-6 in favor of UMass. The Minutemen opened the final quarter with Morley's third goal of the game. Madigan then scored his first of two goals off a feed from Socha to give UMass a 10-6 lead. The closest the Bulldogs would get the rest of the game was to within three goals of the Minutemen.
Madigan and Janowicz both scored off of passes from Morley to close out the scoring for UMass. The victory improves UMass to 3-2 on the season, while Butler drops to 1-5.
Junior goaltender Chris Campolettano (Massapequa, N.Y.) made 11 saves in the UMass net. Marc Ferrandino made eight saves in the cage for the Bulldogs.
