AMHERST, Mass. - Joe Barile and Joe Kostolansky each scored two goals apiece to lead No. 9 Hofstra to a 10-7 win over the University of Massachusetts in collegiate lacrosse action Saturday afternoon. The game was the season-opener for both teams.

UMass got on the scoreboard first when junior midfielder Keith Gabrielli (Farmingdale, N.Y.) scored off a pass from junior midfielder Alex Racioppi (Winchester, Mass.). Hofstra answered right back with a goal from Michael Tierney, before UMass took the lead again with a goal from junior midfielder Jeremy Guski (Mahopac, N.Y.). Gabrielli assisted on the Guski score. Hofstra scored the next two goals to take a 3-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Flying Dutchmen added to their lead when Frankie McDermott scored off a Bryan Walker pass early in the second quarter. UMass responded as junior attackman Rich Kunkel (Centereach, N.Y.) took a pass from Guski and fired a shot past Hofstra goaltender Michael Demeo. The Minutmen tied the game 4-4 at the half when Kunkel made a pass to cutting sophomore midfielder Don Little (Clifton Park, N.Y.), who burried the shot.

UMass opened the third quarter with a quick goal from junior midfielder Jeff Seals (Long Valley, N.J.) who won the face-off and then fired a shot past Demeo. The UMass lead was short lived, however, as Hofstra scored five of the next six goals, including two Barile extra man tallies, to take a 9-6 lead. UMass cut the score to 9-7 when junior attackman John Madigan (Latham, N.Y.) scored with 5:18 remaining in the game. Doug Shanahan iced the Hofstra win by scoring a goal with a little less than four minutes to play.

Junior goaltender Chris Campolettano (Massapequa, N.Y.) made seven saves in the UMass net, while Demeo stopped 10 shots for Hofstra.

The Minutemen are in action next when they travel to Stony Brook for an ECAC Lacrosse League game on Saturday, March 4. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
