STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- Sophomore Dan Paccione (Amityville, N.Y.) scored four goals and eight other Minutemen scored as UMass defeated Stony Brook 17-4 at Seawolves Field in the ECAC Lacrosse League opener for both teams.
Stony Brook scored the first two goals of the game before UMass answered with 11 unanswered goals to end the half. Sophomore Don Little (Clifton Park, N.Y.) got things started for the Minutemen scoring an unassisted goal at the 7:09 mark of the first quarter. UMass tied the game when junior Jeremy Guski (Mahopac, N.Y.) passed to senior Mike Janowicz (Upper Arlington, Ohio) for the goal. Little netted his second goal of the game giving the Minutemen the early 3-2 lead.
UMass continued to keep possession thanks to the work of senior Tim Socha (Hackettstown, N.J.) on faceoffs. Juniors Kevin Dell (Huntington Station, N.Y.), Rich Kunkel (Centereach, N.Y.) and Guski all scored unassisted goals putting UMass up 6-2. Kunkel followed with his second goal of the game on an assist from Matt McFarland (Garden City, N.Y.). Junior John Madigan (Latham, N.Y.), off a feed from Guski, was next to score. Socha netted his first career goal followed by a pair of goals from Paccione to end the half with UMass leading 11-2.
The second half was more UMass. Guski scored on an extra man opportunity on an assist from freshman Kevin Levielle (Delmar, N.Y.). Madigan added his second goal of the night followed by freshman Chris Fiore's (Freeport, N.Y.) first career score. Paccione netted two more goals and Dell added his second of the game to round out the scoring for UMass.
Junior goaltender Chris Campolettano (Massapequa, N.Y.) made 12 saves and senior Robert Murray (Rumsen, N.J.) made two in the UMass net, while John Dobias made 16 saves for the Seawolves.
The Minutemen are in action next when they travel to New Brunswick, N.J. for an ECAC Lacrosse League game against Navy on Saturday, March 11. Game time is 3:00 p.m.
