Women's Tennis Falls To Army At Home, 6-3

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts women's tennis team fell 6-3 tonight at Hampshire College. The Minutewomen fall to 0-3 in the spring season and 3-8 overall with the loss. UMass will next face Colgate on Feb. 20 at 12 p.m. at the Hampshire College indoor courts.
UMass started the match out with two straight doubles losses. The No. 2 pair of sophomore Helena Horak (Westlake Village, Calif.) and freshman Katie Stammen (North Attleboro, Mass.) fell 8-3 to Lillian Lien and Ann Collier, while the No. 3 duo of senior Michelle Kuhr (Longmeadow, Mass.) and junior Robyn Lebovitz (Marietta, Ga.) lost to Jamie Barker and Jen Blatty, 8-1. The No. 1 tandem of senior Ola Gerasimova (Liatvia Ridge, Russia) and sophomore Annie Hamilton (Plano, Texas) won its doubles match over Annie Weber and Cherly Hamilton, 8-4, to improve to 7-6 this year.
In singles action, Horak began with a straight set loss to Hamilton in the No. 2 slot, but then the Minutewomen fought back with two straight wins at the No. 1 and 3 positions. Hamilton fought off Blatty at No. 3, 7-5, 6-3, and Gerasimova fought back from being down 4-1 in the first set, to claim victory over Weber in the No. 1 slot, 7-5, 6-2. UMass then lost its final three singles matches at the fourth through sixth positions, to fall 6-3 in the match.
