OMAHA, Neb. -- The University of Nebraska-Omaha scored two third period goals en route to a 3-2 win over the University of Massachusetts in non-conference college hockey action tonight at the Omaha Civic Auditorium in front of 7,397.
UNO broke open a 1-1 game with two goals in just over a minute midway through the third period. Mike Gabinet scored on a slapshot from the point 7:57 into the period to give the Mavericks a 2-1 lead. A minute and two seconds later, Andrew Wong scored off a pass from Gabinet to put UNO ahead 3-1.
UMass scored with 47 seconds remaining in the game to pull within one at 3-2. Senior captain Jeff Turner (Saginaw, Mich.) scored off a scramble in front of the UNO net. Juniors Martin Miljko (Etobicoke, Ontario) and junior Darcy King (Barrie, Ontario) assisted on the goal.
UNO quickly took a 1-0 lead in the first period when Dave Noel-Bernier scored off a pass from Billy Pugliese at the 1:47 mark. UMass then tied the game at 1-1 when Miljko scored on a breakaway after controlling a loose puck just inside the UMass blueline. It was Miljko's sixth goal of the season.
Neither team scored in the second period as UMass junior goaltender Mike Johnson (Excelsior, Minn.) made 13 saves to keep the game tied 1-1. Johnson finished the game with 33 saves, while Rodney McLeod recorded 20 saves for the Mavericks.
The loss drops the Minutemen to 3-4-1 on the season, while the victory lifts UNO to 5-4-0.
The Minutemen return to action tomorrow night for the second game of the weekend series against Nebraska-Omaha. Game time is 8:05 p.m. (EST).
