AMHERST, Mass. -The University of Connecticut scored two third period goals to earn a 2-2 tie with the University of Massachusetts in college hockey action tonight at the Mullins Center.
After a scoreless opening period, the Minutemen jumped on the board first when junior defenseman Luke Duplessis (Framingham, Mass.) fired a shot from the point through traffic that beat UConn goalie Artie Imbriano. Freshmen Thomas P?ck (Klagenfurt, Austria) and Scott Horvath (West Redding, Conn.) both assisted on the goal giving UMass the 1-0 lead.
P?ck scored on a wrap-around from behind the net with 25 seconds remaining in the second period to give the Minutemen a 2-0 lead heading into the second intermission. Duplessis and sophomore defenseman Samuli Jalkanen (Helsinki, Finland) assisted on the goal.
UConn scored two unanswered goals 38 seconds apart in the third period to tie the game 2-2. Mike Anderson scored the first UConn goal on a wrist shot from the point after Matt Herhal dug the puck out of the corner. Mike Boylan netted the game-tying goal with 7:19 remaining in regulation off a two-on-one with Eric Goclowski.
The two teams combined for only one shot during the overtime period. UMass junior goaltender Mike Johnson (Excelsior, Minn.) made 17 saves for the Minutemen, while Imbriano made 28 saves for the Huskies.
UMass is now 3-5-2 overall on the season, while UConn now stands at 3-4-2.
The Minutemen return to action on Saturday, Nov. 18, when they travel to Troy, N.Y. to face Rensselear. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
