MADISON, Wis. -- No. 3 Wisconsin scored six second period goals en route to a 9-6 victory over the University of Massachusetts in college hockey action tonight at the Kohl Center.
UMass (0-1-0) was led by sophomore Tim Turner (Saginaw, Mich.), who netted two goals and three assists, and senior captain Jeff Turner (Saginaw, Mich.), who had three assists. Sophomore Jimmy Callahan (Lexington, Mass.) and freshmen Scott Horvath (West Redding, Conn.) and Thomas P?ck (Klagenfurt, Austria) all scored their first collegiate goals. Callahan also added a pair of assists.
Wisconsin (1-0-0) opened a 2-1 lead in the first period, but the Minutemen tied the game less than a minute into the second when P?ck scored off a pass from senior Joey Culgin (Framingham, Mass.). The Badgers then scored three consecutive goals to take a 5-2 lead, before Horvath scored to stop the Badger run. The two teams then combined for four goals in a 56-second span, with Tim Tuner scoring both UMass goals assisted from older brother Jeff. The second period scoring finished with another Wisconsin goal to give the Badgers an 8-5 lead heading into the third.
The Minutemen changed goaltenders to start the third period, as senior Markus Helanen (Vantaa, Finland) replaced junior Mike Johnson (Excelsior, Minn.) in the net. UMass scored an early goal to cut the Badger lead to 8-6, when Toni S?derholm scored from the slot with assists going to Tim Turner and Callahan. Wisconsin closed out the scoring with a power plat goal at the 8:55 mark in the third.
Eight players scored for Wisconsin, with Kevin Granato netting a pair of goals.
The two teams play again tomorrow at 8:35 (EST) in the second game of the weekend series from the Kohl Center.
