Hockey Falls to No. 3 Wisconsin, 3-0

MADISON, Wis. -- The University of Wisconsin scored two goals in the first six minutes of the first period en route to the 3-0 win over the University of Massachusetts in college hockey action tonight at the Kohl Center.
The No. 3 Badgers got on the board with a goal from David Hukalo 25 seconds into the game. Jeff Dessner and Dany Heatly assisted on the goal. Wisconsin (2-0-0) increased its lead to 2-0 when Dessner scored off a pass from Brad Winchester.
The goaltenders then took over the game as UMass senior Markus Helanen (Vantaa, Finland) and the Badger senior Graham Melanson both looked solid in the nets. Melanson made 10 saves in the first period and Helanen finished with six.
The second period saw more solid goaltending as Helanen made 20 saves without allowing a goal and Melanson made nine saves.
Wisconsin scored a power play in the third period to take a 3-0 lead. Matt Doman beat Helanen with assists going to Kent Davyduke and Matt Hussey. Helanen finished the game with 38 saves, while Melanson recorded the shutout stopping 32 UMass shots.
The loss drops the Minutemen to 0-2-0 on the season, while the victory lifts Wisconsin to 2-0-0.
The Minutemen have next weekend off before returning to action on Saturday, Oct. 21, in the home-opener against Colgate at the Mullins Center. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
