AMHERST, Mass. - Billy Newson scored the game-winning goal 1:40 into overtime to lead Northeastern University to a 3-2 win over the University of Massachusetts in collegiate hockey action Saturday night. UMass is now 8-12-2 on the season, while Northeastern improves to 11-8-2.
The Huskies scored first in the contest when Ryan Zoller collected his first goal of the season on a scramble in front of the UMass net with 4:08 left in the first period. Northeastern jumped out to a 2-0 lead after Mike Jozefowicz won the opening faceoff of the second period and took the puck in alone to score on a power play just six seconds into the period.
UMass came back just over four minutes later with a goal by sophomore Darcy King (Barrie, Ont.) who collected a rebound off a shot by junior Jay Shaw (Jamestown, R.I.). Sophomore defenseman Luke Duplessis (Framingham, Mass.) gave the Minutemen a 2-2 tie midway through the period when he whistled in a shot from near the blue line that caught the corner of the net. Duplessis scored what appeared to be the go-ahead goal late in the period, but the goal was called off beacuse the net was dislodged.
Neither team was able to score in the third period, setting up Newson?s overtime score. Newson took a pass from Roger Holeczy and fired it on net, just finding an opening near the short-side post for the winning score. UMass goaltender Markus Helanen (Vanta?, Finland) finished the night with 15 saves, while Jason Braun made 30 saves in the NU net.
The Minutemen return to action on Friday night, Jan. 22 when they host Hockey East foe Merrimack. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
