AMHERST, Mass. -- Junior Jeff Turner (Saginaw, Mich.) scored two goals, including the game winner, to lead UMass to a 5-3 victory over Merrimack in Hockey East action Friday night at the Mullins Center. The Minutemen improve to 9-12-2 overall and 3-9-1 in Hockey East, while Merrimack is now 8-14-1, 4-9-1 in league action.

Merrimack got on the board first when Sandy Cohen took a feed in front of the net from Vincent Clevenge and put it past UMass goaltender Markus Helanen (Vantaa, Finland) at the 8:07 mark in the first period. UMass tied the game 12:14 into the first period when Turner connected for his first goal of the night off a pass from his brother Tim Turner (Saginaw, Mich.). Merrimack took advantage of a power play situation, going ahead 2-1 at the 17:48 mark. The Minutemen responded right away with a Darcy King (Barrie, Ontario) goal less then 30 seconds later at the 18:15 mark. Tim Turner took a pass from senior Randy Drohan (Mississauga, Ont.) off the face off and netted the third UMass goal of the period a mere 13 seconds after play resumed.

Merrimack notted the game 3-3 when Anthony Aquino wristed a shot past Helanen at the 15:16 mark of the second period. Jeff Turner scooped up a rebound and put the Minutemen ahead for good with his second goal of the night at the 16:36 mark of the second period.

Senior captain Nathan Sell (Pembroke, Ont.) added an insurance goal for the Minutemen at the 12:38 mark of the final period, connecting with senior Jeff Blanchard (Stoufville, Ont.) and junior Ray Geever (Hanson, Mass.).

Helanen finished the night with 26 saves and improved his record to 8-9-1 with the win, while Cris Classen made 27 saves for the Warriors and took the loss.

UMass will take on Merrimack again tomorrow night in North Andover for the second half of the home-and-home series. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
