AMHERST, Mass. - Junior forward Jeff Turner (Saginaw, Mich.) scored two goals for the second consecutive game on the way to a 3-3 tie between the University of Massachusetts and the University of Vermont in collegiate hockey action Tuesday night. UMass is now 2-5-2 on the season, while Vermont is 3-5-2.
UMass got on the scoreboard early when sophomore Martin Miljko (Etobicoke, Ont.) scored a goal just 25 seconds into the contest. Vermont tied it up fairly quickly when Bryson Busniuk knockled on ein under four minutes later to tie the game at one.
While neither team scored for the rest of the first period, Turner staked the Minutemen to a 2-1 lead 5:37 into the second frame with a power play goal on a scramble in front of the net. UMass took a 3-1 lead midway through the period with Turner?s second goal of the night and fourth of the last two games.
Vermont began its comeback 6:20 into the third period when Jerry Gernander scored on a five-on-three power play to pull back within one. The Catamounts evened the game in the final minute of regulation when they were awarded a penalty shot when UMass senior captain Nathan Sell was whistled for a delay of game for pushing the net off the moorings with the puck loose in the crease. J.F. Caudron converted the penalty shot ? the first ever against the Minutemen ? to tie the game at three. The Minutemen outshot the Catamounts 3-0 in the overtime frame, including a shot by freshman forward Tim Turner (Saginaw, Mich.) from right in front of the net in the final minute of the overtime, but were unable to score.
UMass goaltender Mike Johnson (Excelsior, Mich.) made 23 saves, while Shawn Conschafter made 37 saves for the Catamounts. Vermont coach Mike Gilligan was ejected from the game after receiving a bench minor and a game misconduct late in the second period.
UMass returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 27, when it travels to Union. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
