SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Senior forward Jeff Blanchard (Stouffville, Ont.) scored a goal and added two assists to lead the University of Massachusetts to a 4-1 win over Union College in collegiate hockey action Saturday night. UMass improves to 3-5-2 overall while Union drops to 3-8-0 on the season.
UMass got on the scoreboard early with the third shorthanded goal of the season by senior forward Jeff Blanchard. Blanchard scored at 6:17 into the first period after taking a feed across the crease from junior forward Jeff Turner (Saginaw, Mich.). Turner gave UMass a 2-0 lead just over two minutes later scoring an even-strength goal just after a Union power play had run out.
The Minutemen extended their lead to 3-0 at 3:06 of the second period with a power play goal by sophomore Darcy King (Barrie, Ont.). King redirected a slapshot from the left point by junior Kris Wallis (Agassiz, B.C.) into the net for the score. The Skating Dutchmen finally got their first goal when Kris Goodjohn scored with 1:16 left in the second period on a power play opportunity.
UMass retook a three goal lead under a minute into the third period when senior captain Nathan Sell (Pembroke, Ont.) notched his first goal of the season 57 seconds into the frame. Junior R.J. Gates (Plainville, Conn.) added some insurance with 30 seconds remaining with an empty net goal. The UMass defense played particularly well in the period, successfully killing off 1:08 of a Union six-on-three advantage caused when two UMass players were in the penalty box and the Skating Dutchmen pulled goaltender Brandon Snee.
UMass goaltender Markus Helanen (Vanta?, Finland) finished the night with 22 saves, while Snee made 24 saves for the Skating Dutchmen.
UMass returns to action next Friday, Dec. 2, when it hosts Hockey East foe Boston University. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
